In many industries, obtaining a degree or formal qualification is a standard requirement. While the photography industry does not mandate formal training, that doesn’t mean educational opportunities aren’t available. Numerous courses and workshops exist to help photographers develop their technical and creative skills. Although many of these programs are not formally accredited, they play a vital role in building the expertise needed—particularly in specialised areas such as Newborn Photography.
Newborn photography requires specific safety knowledge when it comes to wrapping and posing infants. Many of the advanced poses seen in professional portfolios are, in fact, composites of multiple images designed to ensure the baby’s safety. Attempting to replicate such poses without proper training can pose significant risks.
When choosing a photographer, it’s important to consider how long they’ve been in business, but even more crucial is understanding their background in photography itself. Have they studied the craft formally? Have they pursued professional development through courses or workshops?
Personally, photography has been a lifelong passion. I studied it at university and have completed numerous training programs focused on safely posing newborns, as well as family and maternity sessions, and sound business practices. This is an incredibly important consideration: always ask whether your photographer carries insurance. Public liability insurance is essential—not only to protect the photographer, but more importantly, to safeguard you and your family.
Photography often takes place in unpredictable environments such as beaches, rocky areas, or even near cliff edges. When children are involved, safety becomes even more critical. A photographer with both public liability coverage and equipment insurance demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and responsible practice. It’s a strong indication that you are in capable and conscientious hands.

- Do they have a structured booking process with clear, timely email correspondence?
These details matter—especially when you’re making a significant financial investment. A professional photographer should be using a reputable third-party booking and invoicing system. This not only reflects good business practice but also provides protection and peace of mind for both parties involved.
